POV: It’s a Friday night and you nor your husband feel like cooking after a long day of work. So on a whim I decide we’re overdue for a date night. Contrary to popular belief I actually knew exactly what I wanted to eat that night. Sushi! I had been craving sushi for a while and wanted to maintain some semblance of a “diet” if you want to call it that. Basically, I didn’t want anything too heavy and every now and then sushi seemed like that perfect thing to satisfy me. So we began to scour through Yelp to find a local sushi spot. We stumbled upon Kopan Sushi & Ramen in Fullerton, CA. With four and half stars and over 3,000 reviews we thought this would be a great option, and we're sure we’re pleasantly surprised.
Located in downtown Fullerton, it took us about 15 minutes from the Anaheim hills area to get to the restaurant. They have a decent-sized public parking lot however it was quite crowded due to it being shared with other businesses on the block. With that being said, make sure you give yourself a few extra minutes before your reservation. It took us about five minutes to find parking and we did not have a reservation so we were in no rush. The restaurant was sandwiched between a boba and teppanyaki restaurant. There was a small waiting list but again, we waited no longer than five minutes. Unfortunately, the only waiting area for the restaurant is outside so we were grateful that the wait was minimal. Next time we will certainly make a reservation. The restaurant itself was small, quaint, intimate and cozy, personally I think it was perfect for a casual date night. The menu is pretty simple, your normal 5-7 selections of ramen, appetizers, sushi rolls, sashimi etc and a drink menu with a variety of Japanese beers and sake. The wait staff was young and friendly and the service was great. I would say that we are pretty easy going when it comes to restaurants as neither one of us are particular. We like to gauge the service by asking our server for recommendations and I would say that Kopan passed the test. They gave us great recommendations based on what we told them we liked.
Now to the food… the sushi was excellent! We got three different sushi rolls to share along with a popcorn chicken appetizer we decided to select at the last minute. Let’s just say we wish we would have gotten two popcorn chickens, both myself and my husband could have finished the appetizers on our own! In terms of the sushi, we ordered the volcano roll, the salmon tempura roll and the super crunch roll. My personal favorite out of the three was the salmon tempura while my husband DEVOURED the volcano roll. The rolls were constructed well, the fish tasted fresh and not to mention, the flavor was THERE! I am personally a crunch and texture girl so I always go for some sort of roll with tempura. I also like a little spicy, as does my husband, so the volcano roll is a sure go to and Kopan did not disappoint with their version. I am not a sushi connoisseur of any sort but I will say we were pleasantly surprised and agreed we will definitely be returning soon.
Be on the lookout for my follow up review as I review their ramen!
